Totem poles and fallen down longhouses at Ninstints, Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, BC

Located in a sheltered bay on the east side of the island, SG̱ang Gwaay Llanagaay ("Red Cod Island"), commonly known by its English name Ninstints, is a village site of the Haida people and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To protect the valuable heritage sites, the Haida operate a Watchmen program, stationing members at traditional sites throughout Haida Gwaii. Those Watchmen not only protect the sites, but often offer a first-hand introduction to Haida culture by sharing their knowledge of the land and sea, their stories, songs, dances and traditional foods.
